Big Change!Author: MichelleDate: 05/23/10 12:33 am[4 Comments]

As promised in another news post, Naice a Nilme is changing its rules. From this moment forth, NAN is not only an archive for angst anymore. The archive is opening up for all gen fiction centering around Aragorn and/or Legolas. To see our updated mission statement and rules, please consult this page. We hope you'll like the new direction!

But you're here for the angst, you say? No problem. If you are looking for a genre in particular, why not browse by genres like angst, drama or hurt/comfort? Or, if you're looking for a real tear-jerker, why not try some character death? To see all option by which you can browse stories on NAN, please go here.

New EmailAuthor: MichelleDate: 05/21/10 10:54 pm[2 Comments]

From now on, when the site sends you emails (story updates, review notifications, passwords) it will use a @naiceanilme.net address. So in case you're using spam protection, please add the domain to your whitelist to make sure you will still receive mail from NAN!

It's not only about Angst anymoreAuthor: MichelleDate: 05/15/10 11:02 pm[6 Comments]

On Aragorn Angst, we've been talking about letting go of the angst/drama rule on Naice a Nilme, which would allow for more stories and more genres. It would also give authors more freedom to add all stories of a series they've written - making their work more complete here in the archive.

Below, is a first draft of the revised rules page. Please have a look at it and comment. Any kind of input is very welcome. Commenting here is only available to registered members, if you are "only" an anonymous user but would like to get your voice heard, you can also comment in my blog.

These rules are not yet in place, though. So don't start posting wildly just yet:)

Mission Statement:

Naice a Nilme is an archive centering around fanfiction about Aragorn and Legolas. Together, alone or with other characters - Naice a Nilme offers a wide range of gen fiction about the elf and ranger. All genres are welcome - from humour to fluff to drama. However, please bear in mind our general rules. If you are in doubt about anything, please don't hesitate to contact the admin for clarification.

We accept following types of stories:

  • Naice a Nilme is an archive for Aragorn and/or Legolas fanfiction, meaning at least one of the characters must be an integral part of the story you are going to post. That doesn't mean they have to be the main character or protagonist. They don't necessarily have to be the ones to drive the plot forwards. A story where several characters ponder their relationship with Legolas, or a story about Aragorn's birth will be very welcome. Both characters would be essential to the story, even though they might not be the main character.

  • Naice a Nilme is essentially a gen archive. If you are not sure what this term means, please consult this page for clarification. The archive allows het content - especially where canon relationships are concerned. However, please keep in mind the general regulations of the archive. The highest rating on Naice a Nilme is M, which means non-explicit adult themes. Rating a story is always a tricky thing and is up to personal preference. As a general rule, steamy sex scenes are off limits.

  • Slash is not allowed.

  • Naice a Nilme will not host Mary Sues, Girl-falls-into-Middle-Earth or Tenth Walker Stories. If you seriously cannot tell whether your original female character is a Mary Sue, please take this test (or any other coming up on Google).
Stories of this fashion tend to steal the focus away from the main plot (and Aragorn or Legolas) to concentrate instead solely on the original character. That is not what this archive is for. However, the general rule against these types of stories does not mean that it cannot be done in a convincing fashion. If you truly think that your story is the one to change everyone's mind, please contact Michelle to see whether you can post the story in question on Naice a Nilme. Unapproved stories featuring Mary Sues, modern day girls and/or tenth walkers will be deleted.

  • Please do not post crossovers or modern day stories. Instead, please consider posting them on Borderland.

Technicalities:

  • You are the author of the story you submitted. Do not submit stories for which you do not have posting rights!

  • Please add a disclaimer to your story. We are all playing in Tolkien's sandbox, giving him a nod is the least we can do.

  • Feel free to add cover artwork to your story by either uploading it to this server or linking to it from your webspace. But please put any picture inside the story, not in the summary.

Housewarming - The WinnersAuthor: MichelleDate: 04/26/10 11:28 pm[4 Comments]

Naice a Nilme's Housewarming Contest is officially over! For the past month, you had the chance to win one of three prizes by gaining points for interaction on the site. I just did the final count and here are the winners:

1rst Place
Linda Hoyland wins the BBC Lord of the Rings radioplay.

2nd Place
Sivan wins the book So You Think You Know The Lord Of The Rings.

3rd Place
And StarLight wins the bookmark calendar.

Congratulations, everyone!

The way I see it, the contest was a wonderful success. In the last 25 days, 49 new stories were added, 209 chapters as well as 33 reviews were posted. All in all, this makes a wordcount of 351,204 words of fic! You are all amazing, thank you to everyone who contributed!

Housewarming - 3 Days LeftAuthor: MichelleDate: 04/22/10 08:39 pm[4 Comments]

If you still want a chance to win one of the prizes of our Housewarming Contest, you should hurry up, because the contest will only run for three more days. The final count will be made on April 25th! I won't say how the tally looks at the moment, but I can tell you that it might be a tight race during the final days:)

Housewarming ContestAuthor: MichelleDate: 04/11/10 08:04 pm[4 Comments]

Our contest has been running for eleven days now and already NAN has seen quite a bit of action. If you don't know anything about the contest, visit this page and have a look at the prizes and how to get them!

The contest will still run till April 25th - that means you have another two weeks to add stories, chapters and reviews. If you ever thought about maybe joining NAN and uploading your fic, now is the perfect time to go through with it!

Welcome Back!Author: MichelleDate: 03/30/10 10:58 pm[5 Comments]

This will be one of my longer posts, so sit down and have a cup of your favourite beverage!

New Naice a Nilme
First of all, if you are here, then you are viewing the new and slightly improved version of Naice a Nilme. Welcome! You probably did not notice, because the hassle with our .com domain got in the way, but Naice a Nilme is celebrating its 5th anniversary this year. That's quite a milestone, especially in the age of the internet where websites pop up and are forgotten in a matter of months. That Naice a Nilme has been around for five years, offering a platform for angst-loving LOTR authors and readers, is something to be proud of and celebrated. For this reason, Naice a Nilme will hold its first contest ever throughout April!

Housewarming Month and Contest
That Naice a Nilme has to suffer a URL change is unfortunate, but let's try to make the best of it! Moving house can also be a positive change and give you a new perspective. To help everyone settle in on our new location (and maybe welcome some new members as well), April will be NAN's Housewarming Month. To encourage you to look around the site, try its features and interact with other users, there will be a one-month contest. With actual prizes, this time! We are giving away three prizes - a radio play, a book and a bookmarks calendar - to the three most active members of our site. Check out the contest!

New URL
For the past five years, our location was naiceanilme.COM. Quite a few of you will remember that the domain went offline last March, and this year we had the same problem, because the domain expired and went into quarantine. Getting a hold of the domain permanently is simply too much hassle, so I decided to take the final step and move Naice a Nilme to a new location. The site can now be found at naiceanilme.NET and this domain is here to stay!

I admit, this was a hard decision to make, because I hate dead links and this URL change will leave quite a few of them. If you are a member of this site, if you have linked to it or if you would simply like to pimp out the new location, I would be eternally grateful! Let people know and if you can spare a moment, please update your profiles and links! To make this work a little sweeter for you, there are a few new banners especially for the .net location:

New Features
When you're already moving, it makes sense to add a few improvements. Old members will notice that the look of the site has changed slightly in some places - The storyblocks should look more compact now, icons have been added to your Account Info, a few buttons have taken the place of lengthy text and the profile pages should look less cluttered. Apart from these cosmetic changes, there are also two new features.

  • Story Tracker
Up until now, if you wanted to get updates for a story, you needed to favourite it. Now you can also track a story by clicking the book-icon. All your tracked stories are stored in you Account Info>Tracked Stories. This feature will also tell you when you last read (=clicked) a story. This way you can determine whether new chapters have been added since your last visit.

  • Invite a Friend
If you have a friend who would also enjoy Naice a Nilme, why not send an invite? You can now easily do that right from your Account Info. The system will check a) whether the person is already a member and b) whether the person has been invited before to make sure that everyone gets invited only once.

Diigo Group
Do you know Delicious, the social bookmarking tool? Diigo is a bit like that, just better and with more features. So from now on, there is a Diigo Group associated with Naice a Nilme to offer you even more angsty reading. This group is open, anyone with a Diigo account can join and add their favourite Legolas & Aragorn links. You can see the latest added stories by clicking on Links in the menu. The page coming up will also offer a way for you to join the group. Try it!

The Downside
The one thing that isn't back as of yet is the Recs Blog. For technical reasons I'm having a hard time to retrieve the backup for the site. I hope to get it back up eventually, but I can't make any promises as of yet.

Last Words
I sincerely hope you'll enjoy the new Naice a Nilme. Stay a while, read a bit and test your luck in the contest! And since quite a few things were changed around (in the middle of everything, the software was upgraded as well), I would ask you to report any problems and bugs you encounter, so that I can smooth out the edges! Have fun!

More Review PyramidAuthor: MichelleDate: 02/17/10 02:11 pm[1 Comments]
Elyaeru from Hawthorn & Vine saw our Review Pyramid and went ahead to steal the idea (with permission, so it's no "real" stealing). In return, she kindly shared her balance counter with NAN, so from now on you will be able to see whether you are a good reviewer (meaning you have left more reviews than you received). To see the balance, go to the Review Pyramid tab in your Account Info.

Top Reviewers 2009Author: MichelleDate: 01/01/10 02:35 pm[4 Comments]

First of all, Happy New Year to all authors, members and visitors of Naice a Nilme. We hope you'll continue to spend your time here and that we can offer Tolkien fans around the world a place to post and read stories! Let's all have a wonderfully angsty 2010 (in fiction only, of course!).

That said, in the beginning of 2009 we introduced the Review Pyramid to Naice a Nilme, prompting authors to not only post but leave reviews as well. The goal was to leave at least as many reviews on the site as you got. We have a few members who met that requirement and those are out official Naice a Nilme Top Reviewers 2009, as evidenced by banners being displayed in their profiles. Congrats!

Review PyramidAuthor: MichelleDate: 12/02/09 01:29 pm[2 Comments]

We've just entered the last month of 2009 and that means we're on the last stretch of 2009's Review Pyramid. The Pyramid is a little reviewing game you can play on Naice a Nilme. It's our little reminder that should encourage you to review other authors' work. The one and only rule goes as follows:

For every review you receive on the archive, leave one for someone else.

The count of reviews you got and reviews you wrote should be balanced. Of course, you can always start trying to achieve that goal - even now in December.

I just updated NAN's software to the latest version (3.5.1.). If you note anything amiss, please comment here!

Twitter on ProfilesAuthor: MichelleDate: 07/18/09 02:58 pm[4 Comments]

As you might have noticed, you have the opportunity to link to various other sites and communities from your profile. Because Twitter seems to become more and more popular among fandom, I have added Twitter to the profile pages. Go to your Edit Bio page and add your username to link visitors to your Twitter page.

Please note that NAN has its own Twitter profile. You can follow us here and receive tweets when new stories have been posted.

Attention: NAN currently supports the following services:

  • Livejournal
  • AIM
  • ICQ
  • MSN
  • Yahoo
  • DeviantArt
  • MySpace
  • Fanfiction.net
  • Twitter
Please only add your username into any of the fields, not the complete URL to your profile page on any of these services. This will result in broken links. Also, if you want other services to be supported, please comment here and I'll see what I can do about it.

While on the subject of profile pages: It is suggested to never add email addresses in a clickable way to a profile or story as this will result in more spam for your inbox. All members can be reached by clicking the Contact link in their profile. If you really want to display your email clearly, you might want to consider making it spam-proof by using a service like Hidetext.

The Review PyramidAuthor: MichelleDate: 01/05/09 04:16 pm[4 Comments]
A while ago, Amarok told me of her own private plan to leave a review on the archive for every comment she got on one of her stories. I liked that idea very much - it's simple, yet it encourages people to spend time reading and reviewing. Therefore, I decided to propose Amarok's idea to all NAN authors. I've called it the Review Pyramid. Consider it an archive-wide game of sorts. If you're interested in playing, check out this page.

Happy New Year!Author: MichelleDate: 01/01/09 04:37 pm[1 Comments]
Naice a Nilme (with Aragorn and Legolas in tow) wishes all authors, readers and passers-by a happy new year. May 2009 be a good one for you!

October - Story of the MonthAuthor: MichelleDate: 10/10/08 09:14 pm[4 Comments]

Story of the Month is Linda Hoyland's "A Taste of Honey"!
