It is really sad, and shocking, and terrible, what one "human being" can do to another.

Author's Response: Yes, I went into rather a dark place with this chapter. I thought it was important, for this story, that the evil deeds be committed by Men (rather than orcs/Nazgul/fantasy-villain-of-your-choice) since humans really are capable of atrocities for all kinds of reasons.
I hope you keep reading despite the bleak moments.
