You're quite evil - all this foreshadowing and those feelings of dread. And it seems you also have a knack for introducing character and then killing them off. That's not nice, you know!

Now, let's see whether the person still alive can shed some light onto these strange goings on.

Author's Response: Bwa ha ha!  I *am* evil. *grin*  At least in that I like to weave a complex story, and often that means, alas, killing off a character or two.  You're really flying through this story, I must say!  Enjoy, and thanks for the comments along the way. :)

I remembered this quote when reading this chapter: "And indeed the love that the horses of the Rangers bore for their riders was so great that they were willing to  face even the terror of the Door, if their masters’ hearts were steady as they walked beside them."

And the Nazgúl's footprints are really creepy, I wonder when he will show up, and what he wanted in that village.

Author's Response: It seems odd to say glad I creeded you out, but I am. :)   And yes, don't you love the horses in Tolkien?  They really are characters unto themselves.  The horses here were a little skittish about the smell of death, and likely the nervousness of their riders transmitted itself to them.  Amazing how animals sense that sort of mental energy, isn't it?

Roisin and I feel you did a good job of illustrating the scene. You have us curious as to what could have done all this to the settlement. You left a good lead in to the next chapter too.

Author's Response: Thanks!  This one was difficult to write... to not go into too much graphic detail but to also make it clear it was an awful situation the Rangers had to deal with.  Fine line between too much information and just enough.  I'm glad it left you curious!

Good chapter.  Sad, but very well written.  This is the village from your Teitho story, right?  Are Bilfen and Kenevir dead?  I don't want them to be dead . . . (pouts)

This chapter was very well written.  Too many authors either overindulge in gore or ignore the affects of battle altogether.  You cut a good balance--showing the emotional effects on the characters without similarly grossing out your audience.  Kudos!

Author's Response:

Thank you, Brennan!  Yes, this is the village from the Teitho story, although I had to tweak the name when I discovered later that there were no crossings of the Hoarwell River north of the Last Bridge.  It was Bracken's Ford in the No Greater Comfort, so I tweaked it to "Ferry" to cover  my tracks with this one.  I'll eventually go back and revise No Greater Comfort so it all matches.

I'm glad you felt I cut a good balance... this one was hard to write simply because I wasn't sure how much detailed information to give.  I like to err on the side of too little when it comes to the graphic bits, but I also wanted to make sure that the impact on Aragorn and the Rangers was clear.  So far, from the feedback I've gotten, I think I managed to do that.  Whew!  LOL
