This is such a sweet story, I love how Aragorn cares for the children, even though he combines it with his other duties. The mix of bad things to come (the search for Gollum for example) togehter with the light atmosphere the children and the firework provides are done wonderfully.

Nice! I like how Aragorn's concern for the hobbits in your story seems to match up with what Tolkien said about hobbits in the book. And it amuses me greatly that you called them hedonistic!

One thing though; at the time of Bilbo's Eleventy-first part Aragorn was only 58. It is easy to forget how much time elapsed between theParty and when Frodo sets out with the Ring, but he was only 21 or so when Bilbo left, and he was around 50 when he had to leave the Shire.

But that is just a little detail. I enjoyed the story!

Author's Response:

I'm so glad you enjoyed this story!  I have nothing but affection in my heart for hobbits' "hedonism."  ;)

I've double-checked, but I'm pretty sure Aragorn was in fact 70 at the time of the party, while Frodo was 33 and "coming of age" (hobbits have long childhoods:).  There are a few references to Frodo's age in "The Long-Expected Party," and I checked those against my much-dog-earred timeline in Appendix B.  The party happened in Third Age 3001, while Aragorn was born in T.A. 2931.  He was seventy when Frodo got the ring and turned eighty-eight just before the end of the Ring War.  Timelines are complicated, and they've definitely been my undoing in the past.
