... uhm... nervous cough... what should I say here... that I like to read and sometimes write stories about the ranger and the elf?

Otherwise: I am female, and over 40. And I love horses.

Oh well, and now I am 'outing' myself, as I promised I'd do if Michelle would allow German stories :-): On fanfiction.de/net (de: http://www.fanfiktion.de/u/jandrina) I post as jandrina for 'historical' reasons, and a few of my german stories do exist as audiofics on jinjurly's site (also under the name jandrina: http://audiofic.jinjurly.com/category/jandrinaauthor).

(actually, the audiofic-thingy is the reason why I switched to writing in german, I love the concept of audiofics, but my spoken english is beyond horrible... so if anyone wants to make an audiofic of another one of my stories: great - go ahead!)

Oh my, what a touching story. I find I can relate to Elladan a lot - a frightening thought, that... but honestly, he had a point about the messiness often involved in handling babies ;-). I like how different you portray the two Peredhil. They are obviously close and love each other dearly, but they are not the same person. That makes them more real to me. Thanks for posting this story.

Author's Response:

Thank you, Amarok!  I'm glad you liked this ... and glad you liked that I made Elladan and Elrohir unique.  Not that I've known a lot of identical twins, but the ones I have known were very much each their own person, even though they had so many similarities (and of course that bond that only twins have).  The Peredhil are so fascinating to me, and those two in particular.  Glad you liked this, and thank you for leaving a review! :)

At Hope's Edge by cairistiona [88 Reviews]
It is October, T.A. 3000, and the Dúnedain continue to dwindle, a scattered remnant held together by hope in their Chieftain. But what happens when the Chieftain’s own hope starts to falter? An exploration of tragedy, grief, injury and illness and its effects on the most hardy of living Men. Now complete.

Rated for violence, angst, and OC character death. Except for a handful of OC’s, the characters belong to Prof. Tolkien.

Wow..., what a beginning :-). I loved the two letters, the first was great to introduce the characters of the story, and the second was how I also perceive Aragorn would have written, for exactly the reasons you gave. Your way with words is great, as always.

(I wrote this over weekend, but had not time to post..., now while I have a minute to spare to post I see Chapter 1 is up, and I have no time to read... oh well... now I remember again why I prefer to read stories only when they are fully posted :-) ).

Author's Response:

Thanks, Amarok!  I'm so glad you liked the prologue ... that was one of the new things that you hadn't seen.  That and, well, most of the second half of the story! LOL  But I'm glad you liked it and found it compelling.  It was hard to find a way to quickly introduce all those Rangers, so I let Aragorn wax a little eloquent about them to his father.  :)   And feel free to wait and read the whole thing once it's all the way up.

Thanks again!

This is a great story of hope lost and regained. I love this tale... all the action and emotion :-)..., I'll just point out a few things of the chapters that were really new to me, but I really liked it all.

I definitely liked your Glorfindel and your Erestor. I loved the others as well of course, but these two kind of surprised me :-). Sometimes they don't get a face of their own because they are minor characters, but you gave them life... Supportive Glorfindel and overdoing-it-with-explanations Erestor were very enjoyable - and believable - to me.

And I was also touched by all the pictures you created about what follows in war, after the actual battle is over, like the scenes in Windydale after the first attack. I loved how you wrote that, even though it was difficult to read, emotion wise. Hehe, and the 'Trotter'-Reference and other little things like that were very amusing.

OK, I'll also mention something I knew already: the Athelas scene, definitely among my favourites of this story – Halbarad’s worry and how Aragorn just barely manages to say what would aid him - is heartbreaking. And the recurring nightmare was great as well.

Well, I hope you'll soon tell us more about Aragorn and his chosen men - or alternatively about the hunt Gandalf and Aragorn are about to begin :-).

(...and now I've just seen there are Appendices..., have to check them out :-) ...)

Author's Response:

Thank you, Amarok!  And thank you especially for all the help at the outset.  I'm glad you enjoyed how it all turned out... I was definitely wondering what you'd think fo the entire tale.  *grin*   That entire beginning would not have turned out as well as it did without your urging me to show more, and I'll be ever grateful for that.

And yes, there are more stories about Aragorn and his chosen men to come.  I can't seem to leave Denlad and Halbarad out of a story.  And eventually yes, there'll be stories about hte hunt for Gollum, so more of Aragorn and Gandalf, which I really enjoyed writing.  Finding the time is the hardest part of it all at the moment. :)

Enjoy the appendices... I have more to add to them, but that time thing is getting in the way!

I love your writing style. Also it feels very balanced, eg the conflict of pressing children and far too old people into service. It is necessary, but also cruel in a way, just like the conflict of having to inflict pain to heal.

Your characterisation of Leoma is great, and I like to see Eowyn, Gimli and especially Aragorn through her eyes. Thanks for sharing this story.

I am so out of the loop, I havn't even read the Teithos.... and now I see what I missed :-). I like this little interaction between the two friends. And at least for me it is a nice twist that Legolas gives hope to Aragorn concerning the resoration of Mirkwood, and not the other way around. In my mind it would be hard to not lose hope after seeing Mirkwood only in darkness for so long, and I like Legolas' faith here.

Author's Response:

Hey Amarok *waves madly*! Haven't seen you around in a while, it's so good to see you're back - and with a new story no less. That's how I like it:)

Well, you know me. My Legolas rarely needs someone to pat him on the shoulder and tell him "It'll be all right". It's mostly the other way 'round!

Oh my, being warmed by a cow-loving dragon..., alone that picture is really fun to imagine :-). And even funnier is Aragorn's indignation at being called scrawny..., he should be happy the dragon thinks he has not enough flesh on his ribs ;-).

I enjoyed this story, it made me laugh quite a lot, without being shallow. Thanks for sharing.

Author's Response: Many thanks for your much appreciated review. I'm delighted you enjoyed my story and it made you laugh.

Woho..., that was... hm... Havn't really made up my mind yet. Great, Creepy. Amazing... Confusinig. I followed what Aragorn felt, or tried, but then I needed to distance myself from it.

I especially liked that it was his decicion that saved him in the end (OK, I know, Gandalf did as well, but also he saved himself). The shadow - light - sight - thingy was consequently also that experiment of yours I found most interesting.

Thank you very much for the review!

Pruuust.... poor Aragorn! Being caught so unawares in the tub of all things ;-). Loved the indirect connection to the movie, and had quite a laugh at the images created in my head by your story.

More soon please... I need to know that Aragorn survives Elronds wrath..., and the... hummm, what is it going to be... teasing?... of his sons ;-).

Oh, and I liked that you describe Aragorn as tidy and enjoying to be clean, that he just is smelly and dirty because he has no other choice in the wilds. That's how I also imagine him - and how it happens with me every time I come near a horse stable ;-).

Author's Response: Thanks for reading. I'm glad you are enjoying the story. :)

VeryBigGrin..., hehe..., poor Aragorn..., can it even get worse? I just imagine the whole fellowship plus a few more gathered around him in his state of undress - only bearing even more blue and red spots due to all the falling and fighting...

... be soft on him, I really feel sorry for the poor guy, and as he said himself, he's been through a lot already... ;-)

Author's Response: Oh don't ask if it can get worse. It always can! ;P Thanks for reading and reviewing. More coming soon.

Nice story. I liked the viewpoint of the oak most, because it is unusual, and because its acceptance of its ending life and at the same time its joy to live was well captured. And I am happy that Legolas was there when it finally died.

That the oak saved an older Aragorn was fitting as well. We all get older, don't we ;-).

Author's Response: Thank you, Amarok! I'm glad you enjoyed the tale. The Oak became an OC that just took over the tale! ;) Thanks for reading and reviewing

Awww... nice. I am not a lover of holidays normally, but this makes me wish I was. Aragorn is wise to cherish what he has, and I think that is a lesson many (myself included) should learn from.

I've read this a few times already, and love it anew each time. You really had me for a moment the first time I read it, I indeed believed your character to be a handicapped beggar, despite the name that should have given it away ;-). My positive delight was even greater when I discovered who really was behind the 'mask', and also I of course love it that Aragorn takes care of the problems of some as 'low' as beggars!

Thanks for a great story!

Author's Response:

Many thanks for your much appreciated review. I'm thrilled to hear that that you enjoyed my story sufficiently to read it more than once and that I managed briefly to convince you that "Barahir" was a beggar!

As you luckily tell the reader more than poor Elrond and the others know, I could enjoy the many misunderstandings of the story a lot :-). Hehe..., I like this kind of mixup, the thought of Glorfindel as Aragorns wife and the angsty elements, eg while poor Aragorn lies in the coffin..., all in all it made for relaxing light reading, the whole vampire-thingy with Gandalf and his smoke figures. Thanks for an enjoyable hour :-).

Author's Response:

Thank you so much! I'm glad the story managed to amuse you. I have always found it easier to write drama and angst, rather than humour, so whenever I succeed in writing something that can count as 'light reading', I am quite happy! And, of course, humour is good, but I still couldn't resist filling the story with as much Aragorn angst as would fit inside :-)
