New to the LotR fandom, though a long time fan of Tolkein and have been fooling around in the realm of fan ficiton in another fandom for around six years.  During a discussion of fan fic in general, a friend noted my interest in LotR and sent me a couple of links to archives.  Needless to say, I was instantly hooked.

I've found the substance abuse of fan fiction leaves no traces and is cheaper and healthier (sorta - unless one counts the weird pscyological issues that can devlop from living in a fantasy world all the time) than most other addictiions.  And really, who can resist the elf?  Yes, yes, I know there are some who can, I'm just not one of them.  I've always been drawn to males who could make caressing a bow look like a lover's touch.

OH!  I was so hoping someone else would enter the game too!  I read this piece over on ff.net and it was lots of fun getting to *hear* it as well.  Hearing a story by its own author brings an added depth (imho) that doesn't necessarily come across in written form.

Here's hoping you'll do more!  I'm hooked on this genre already!

Goose bumps are traveling up and down my arms and spine.  Amarok, that was gorgeous!  You have a beautiful reading voice; the pacing was superb and the story riveting.  I brought my computer down with me to listen to this as I was eating supper, but it was so softly read, it required headphones to hear it and I ended up so caught by the beauty of the story and your reading, I quit eating so I could concentrate on just listening.  I found your German accented English lovely to listen to as well!  This is one I will listen to again and again.  I'm so glad you decided to do this!

What exquisite handling of Aragorn's healing of Faramir!  Aragorn's quiet urgency as he feels himself beginning to fade, Faramir's gentle resistance and his heart-rending initial desire to move on, are so evocative, the emotions so beautifully understated, but yet, sooooo intense.  Mmmmm delicious for both the ear and the heart.

It's been such a fun advenuture both making and listening to these.  I hope Michelle's legacy will continue to bring stories and readers like this to the podfic format!

How incredibly awesome!  I was blown away right from the start that this was read by more than one person!  That took a lot of skill - much harder to edit with multiple voices, if editing was required at all.  Multiple voices really adds a lot to the texture of the piece though.

Beautifully done!  Please share my enthusiasm with the rest of your crew as well, N. Forest!  Excellent story, well done POV, and fabulous read aloud!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ... I'm wiping away tears and sniffing at this darling little tale.  And the office is looking at me strangely.  :)  But no matter, I loved this story and what a great job you did reading it!

The strange new taste of the honey cakes at the end made me smile through my tears.  And I loved, loved, loved the beautiful rendition of the voices - though I'm not quite sure which an *accent* and which is *real* since they are both so beautifully done!

Excellent job on a great story!

When I read this story a couple of months ago, I had just (accidentally) dowloaded the newest version of Explorer and it took me an hour of trying to leave a review for this, to a) realize I was never going to get the dang thing to send and b) figure out I had no way of reaching you otherwise.  I was very sad.  A chat with Michele helped figure out what the problem was finally, but it's taken me this long to get back out here again to write a new review.

I hope you get this, because at the end of it, I have a question.

First, I must tell you that I laughed until tears streamed down my face, and then laughed some more.  I laughed so hard and so long, I raised the level my endorphins through the ceiling - and made the cat and the dog run and hide, likely thinking I was having strong hysterics.

I haven't read it again - yet - but just sitting here remembering Elrond beating the crap out of Glorfindel is making me snort all over again.  The fallout of Elladan's bored prank is truly, madly, deeply, insanely hilarious.  It's obvious from the punishment meted out to the perpetrator, that Elrond has had long centuries of experience in that department.

And poor little Aragorn - trying to hold his insides in ... yikes!  I'm off again.  Next thing you know, I'll be slobbering all over my keyboard again.

I saw a note on another story - because of course I've read them all now, but this was my favorite - that you'd had trouble with your hand and Michele says it's been awhile since she's seen you around.  I will try eventually, to leave feedback for the others I've read, but it saddens me greatly to think that there might no more Pentangle stories forthcoming.

Now to the question -  Michele, with her archive birthday podcast challenge, has created an addict.  I'm in love with pod ficcing and I was wondering if you would be willing to let me podcast Belly-Butter.  That is of course, if I can read it without falling out every other sentence.  If you would like a sample of my work, listen to the first few minutes of ...and it was done, written by Neoinean.  It's under the pod fics here on NAN.  I'm working on a story of Michele's right now, and would be thrilled to get permission to read BB.

All the best!  And I'm rueing the day when the fandom lost you.

Author's Response:

Hi Tanis -

Although it's true I'm no longer writing or reading right now (and for awhile, I'm afraid), I don't like to think of myself as having 'left the fandom'.  I keep hoping to return, allthough my RL situation doesn't look good for that. I'm not seriously ill or anything, just taking care of two sets of elderly parents (mine and his).  I had to take the time to answer your lovely review, though. Thank you so much for your kind words. This story was my only attempt at 'slapstick' comedy, and I wasn't sure I carried it off at all. You make me feel a little better about it.

Please feel free to podcast 'Belly Butter'. I'm quite honored that you would think it worthy of your time.

All the best to you as well!  And again, thank you for taking the time to write more than: "Loved it! LOL"  (my pet peeve. Especially when the story is an angst-fest!)

Just thought you'd like to see this review as well - forwarded from my friend Anne, who is my podcast beta. We are both huge fans of the *little* genre and she enjoyed it as much as I did.

Oh oh oh I've been laughing hysterically - even though I was getting a bit worried about poor baby Aragorn's distress in the middle of it! But it was all so funny - the whole chain reaction, Elrond (who in my mind's eye always seems to be so composed and wise) punching poor Erestor, Glorfindel sticking his own blade into his thigh, Elrond punching his son on the nose... elves gone mad! And Estel in the middle of it screaming his poor wee little head off! What a mean mean prank to play on a baby boy. I loved in the beginning when Estel came running to Elladan so horrified that his belly butter had disappeared. How adorable!

LOVED the ending, Elladan wanting to go on a looong journey far far away and then ending up being Estel's slave for playing horsey and... 'howls' smelling his feet - that really cracked me up right again! He's going to suffer reaaallll bad, the prankster.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh --- nope, I can tell already this isn't going to work ----- but I'll try anyway.

I got goosebumps reading this story! What a way to grow up, with the adults in your life closing down every time a question is asked. But I loved Estel's imaganation in this and thought at the end, his father was likely all of those things and more - except for maybe a dragon slayer.

A great piece, searingly poignant in just a few worods!

Author's Response:

What a relief when it's finally working. Yay!

I could never quite imagine how Aragorn might have grown up with all these questions that his mother and/or Elrond could not answer. It must have been so confusing and frustrating. Tolkien spares something like 2 sentences for this, but I always thought in reality it must have been very complicated.

I'm baaaaaack! Though only for a short while this time. Duty calls and I'm sneaking in a few seconds of pleasure.

I'm so glad you were on the Feb story voting or I might never have found you! And what a loss that would have been. I love this little encapsulated *history* of Aragorn from from his first squawks to the accession.

Great compare and contrast between his life and that of Denethor, whose place he might rightfully have accepted and saved himself long years of hardship and privation. You made me wonder, had their roles been switched, would the Denethor I know from the books and the movies have made a different choice from the one Aragorn made in that moment?

And the poignancy of repeating his father's mistakes on Denethor's part is so very subtly done! I think that's what I love most about your story telling - it's all there, but never glaringly stated. You tell us lots of things in a look or a glance, or gesture, and sometimes a setting, with very few extraneous words. As in this story - Denethor screwed up with his own sons too.

Sighhhhhhhh ... the dryer buzzer is going off. I must leave you again! But I'll be back!

:)

This one brought tears - not streaming tears, just those pricking ones that swim and cloud the vision a bit. So gently thoughtful in the comparisons between not only the children, but the wealth of people Aragorn has met in his travels.

But the beauty of these wild Rohirrim children here, mixing and mingling with all and sundry is simply delightful.

Not only that, you've woven into this little story, a whole subtle subtext on the value of children overall.

Loved it!

Author's Response:

Thank you!  It's great to know that you enjoyed this and that some of the little subtlties came out.  Sorry I made you cry.  Good tears, I hope.

The circular momentum of this story struck me, like whirlpool galaxy it begins and ends in the same place, but visits lots of other places in between. Places that echo and reecho the farewells and partings in the beginning and ending. Excellently crafted in it's symmetry.

But what I love best about this story is Elrond's palpable pride in this son of his heart and how you wrapped those long removed ancestors into Elrond's satisfaction as well.

I'm madly in love with your Aragorn!

Author's Response:

Thanks for another lovely review!  With this one, I debated whether I could actually tell it all in flashback or if I should switch to a more traditional linear structure.  I decided to go ahead with it in the end because I wanted to show Elrond coming full circle, so to speak.  I'm glad you enjoyed it!

peace,

No, I'm not stalking you, lol, I was wandering archives and stopped by here and this was under Most Recent.  And since I really enjoyed it, I figured it was proper and fitting to leave you a note here as well.

And then I realized one of the pod fics submtited for the contest had been written by you!  Eldarion's escapades with the sweets.  N. Forest did a great job of reading it and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the story when it posted!

And then there's this story.  What a great response to this B2MEM challenge!  Using a young Aragorn is a perfect match up for broken things and poor, anxious Gilraen's arc from defiance to pride is nicely done.  A darling tale all around.

Author's Response:

Many thanks for your much appreciated review. I'm always delighted when anyone is following my work !I'm pleaed you enjoyed this story. It was a great thrill to me that N Forrest decided to read a "Taste of Honey" for the podfic contest.

I'm so glad you liked this glimpse of Aragorn and his mother.

Ouch and ouch!  But oooohhhhh revenge is sweet and how very interesting that Arwen is able to *provide* such a realistic experience for her husband.

I'm thinking this make a better torture fic than humor, though.  :)

Author's Response:

Oh yes. 'Skadefryd' we call it in Norwegian, that feeling of sweet revenge.

I have no idea whether Arwen would even have cramps, or be able to transfer it this way, but it fits my story ;)

lol!

Thank you.

What strange things names and titles are.  How defining - and yet, essentially no more the mist that obscures Estel/Aragorn's vision here.  He is so much more than a name, but he has yet to realize that.  This is a lovely capture of his youthful insecurity in that place between two worlds he knows, yet no longer inhabits one and does not yet fit into the other.  That is a lonely, lonely place to be and you've portrayed it beautifully.

I hope this story is finished and just being posted chapter by chapter!

Author's Response:

Thank you very much for the review! You are very right about the mist, and that "He is so much more than a name, but he has yet to realize that". We will see that realization later in the story. And yes, it is finished, and I will post it as regularly as I can.
